Warfare is much different from Civilization III. Even if it is closer to Call To Power, it remains original.

First, units are more specialized, and have specific bonus against other units, or in some terrains, or have other specific abilities.

Second, at the tactical scale the range is a lot larger, and units can actually fire at other units a few tiles away. Support units are thus much more important. All the units in a stack in the strategic map will fight together on the tactical map; it is even possible to attack from different directions once the communication technologies are available.

Units facing has an impact on their strength in battle, so it is possible to outflank a unit.

The upkeep of units is also very different, and the units need supply. If they fail to have this, their morale will drop; they may be unable to move, have reduced strength, or suffer attrition, and even be destroyed. This obligation to remain in supply range will actually limit the possibilities to move a unit to far from cities, at least until new technologies can be used to allow projecting troops far away.

Units have morale, so they can decide to retreat from battle, rebel, or surrender.
